The 12th International Micro-insurance Conference) kicked off today (15 November) in Colombo on the theme of ‘Driving growth and sustainability – A business case for micro-insurance’.
Over 400 representatives from 50 countries are expected to attend this conference being held from 15 to 17 November.
During a media briefing prior to the inauguration of this conference, organising committee chairman Dr. Jagath Alwis said various specialists from sectors like insurance, re-insurance, mobile operators, insurance regulators etc would join this conference.
Furthermore, Dr. Jagath Alwis described this conference as an opportunity to share the experiences with specialists in the insurance sector in other countries.
Meanwhile, in response to a query by Ada Derana on the response to the 2017 budget proposal for insurance coverage for students, Jagath Alwis said, “The government has proposed a Rs. 200,000 insurance cover to students through the 2017 budget. We are yet to receive the full details regarding this. This could either be a health insurance or personal accident coverage. Our members in the insurance sector are prepared to accept this challenge. State and private sector insurance companies in our organization are prepared to offer these insurance policies at low rates.”
