Lanka Salt Limited a profit making venture

Lanka Salt Limited (LSL) in Hambantota with the new administration under the present government has made a net profit of Rs.990 million within two years. The new administration has been appointed in March 2015 when the company was making a loss of Rs. 330 million.

The LSL under the previous government in 2014 had an income of Rs.755 million and a net profit of Rs. 73 million. In 2015 under the new administration the income has increased upto Rs.1010 million. That year there had been a loss of Rs. 170 million due to the harvest being affected by the adverse weather. This year, the LSL has an income of Rs. Two billion with a net profit of Rs. 990 million.

Earlier, the LSL’s sales were about 1,200 metric tons and currently, it has increased to 5,500-6,000 metric tons. The entire salt requirement in Sri Lanka is about 120,000 metric tons. The LSL this year has produced 106,000 metric tons and have planned to develop the Hambantota saltern to produce the rest needed to fulfil the whole requirement.
