Tourist arrivals into Sri Lanka have registered a drop of 2.3 percent during the month of September 2017. While 145,077 tourists have arrived in Sri Lanka during September, the arrivals for the corresponding month in 2016 had been 148,499.
Meanwhile, the total number of tourist arrivals during the first nine months of 2017 has been 1,551,931. This is a growth of 2.9 percent when compared to the 1,508,832 tourist arrivals during the first nine months in 2016.
At the beginning of this year, the government set a target of 2.5 million tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka. However, 950,000 tourists should arrive in Sri Lanka during the October to December 2017 if this target is to be achieved. Under the prevailing situation, this is a difficult target to be achieved since Sri Lanka has never recorded a tourist arrival of 300,000 per month so far.
