Mahindra has announced to launch an electric version of its KUV100 compact SUV in 2018. Confirming this to media at the launch of the KUV100 facelift+ in Mumbai, Pawan Goenka, managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) also said that all the SUVs from the brand will have an electric variant in future.
Goenka said that no one can predict if EV penetration will be 20 percent or 100 percent by 2030 but Mahindra will be ready for it.
Mahindra didn’t reveal any detail on the powertrain that will be used in the electric KUV100. However, the Indian automaker already announced that it is working on the development of technologies for next-generation electric vehicles (EVs). The company told that the new powertrains will be ranging from 41PS to 204PS and will also provide a better range with the use of higher-capacity batteries.
The only brand offering electric cars in India, Mahindra is currently selling e20 hatchback and eVerito compact sedan. However, the high price tags of these vehicles hinder the success of EVs in the country.
With a higher level of localisation and battery production, the company expects a drop of 20 per cent in the EV prices in the next two years and the effect can be expected to start reflecting from the launch of the KUV100 electric.
