Sri Lanka’s first dedicated IoT competition “SLIOT Challenge” and “Robo Games” concluded at the recently held Techno 2017 Exhibition. The SLIOT Challenge, a collaborative effort between the Sri Lanka Telecom Group – Sri Lanka’s largest Telecommunication Service Provider, the University of Moratuwa and the Institution of Engineers of Sri Lanka (IESL), was brought together in order to encourage the technological sector and the many innovative and entrepreneurial minds in the country to look beyond the present and take Sri Lanka into the future. It was the ideal platform on which to demonstrate the endless opportunities and challenges involved with this emerging IoT concept.
The competition was aimed at undergraduate academics, start-ups and SMEs to encourage them to come up with solutions that help customers digitize their lifestyle and businesses with a particular focus on operations which include connected assets, buildings, vehicles, field staff and the supply chain.
The challenge was held under ‘Graduate’ and ‘Open’ categories. Team ‘ASDF’ of the University of Moratuwa, won first place in the under graduate category of the IoT competition showcasing an innovative solution for a monitoring system for the usage of water for plants. 1
st runners up in the same category were the ‘Innovation Seekers’ from the institute of Vocational Technology for their proposal on a monitoring system for machinery condition. Team ‘Zeon’ won the open category with their IOT based agriculture management system, whilst team ‘Smart Paddy Fields’ were the 1
st runners up for their creative solution in paddy field management
The Robo games was a separate aspect at the Techno 2017 exhibition, which was also powered by SLT. The University of Moratuwa assigned varying tasks to the teams eager to participate in this category and innovative Robo’s were built to complete those tasks and presented at the exhibition by Robo enthusiasts as well as Beginners eager to hone their skills. Team ‘Code’ of ICBT were adjudged the winners whilst the ‘Titans’ from SAITM were the 1
st runners up and the ‘White Walkers’ from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Ruhuna were the 2
nd runners up in the Undergraduate category. In the ‘open’ category, team ‘Zenith’ from Royal College Colombo were adjudged the winners, Team ‘LHAMO’ from Thalawakele T.M.V and Team Curiosity from Kuliyapitiya Central were adjudged 1
st and 2
nd Runners Up respectively.
All the winners walked away with trophies, certificates as well as attractive cash prizes. SLT warmly congratulates all winners on their remarkable achievement. The SLIoT challenge was powered by SLT’s next generation fibre optic broadband which is poised to be the most reliable broadband connection for the future generation bandwidth and high speed demand.
