Four innovative presentations concluded the SLIIT Corporate Challenge 2016 held at the SLIIT Campus in Malabe last week. A total of 20 state and private universities took part in the challenge themed “Å milestone to Corporate Sustainability” with a primary focus on how companies serve the triple bottom-line; People, Profit and Planet through CSR activities. The key criteria of this year’s challenge was stipulated by main sponsor EWIS that required all teams base their innovations around the use of any EWIS/OCTA smart device.

The four winning teams are CINEC who secured first place with Achievers Lanka Business School, and SLIIT coming in second and third respectively. The University of Colombo School of Computing came in 4th place. Each of the teams ensured that their solutions were operationally feasible, financially viable, technically possible and in line with a probable vision and mission.

Team CINEC comprising  Oshad de Silva, Ravindu Thamiska, Sishira Laksmal and Yasith Thilanga presented Project Hambegamuwa, an emergency warning system to mitigate the human-elephant conflict. The use of GPS trackers or Passive Infrared Sensors (PIR) fixed to safety poles will alert villagers of elephants, giving them enough time to evacuate the area. The devices used were the OCTA T700M and the EWIS Tablet PC.

Achievers Lanka Business School presented a real time information access platform for public transport users to be informed of accurate arrivals and departure schedules via EWIS kiosks located at bus stops. Bus drivers will enter the information using the OCTA T700M tablet located in the vehicle to send the data to the kiosks.

Speaking at the event, Mubarak Sadhar, Chief Marketing Officer, EWIS said, “Coming from a company that comprises people who are young and hungry for recognition, full of talent and brimming with confidence, each and every employee cares deeply for their country, community and colleague. Hence, we believe that the next generation of innovators and employees must work to safeguard the triple bottom-line at all costs.”

The Chief Guest at the event was Mr. Ariyaseeli Wickremanayake, who was welcomed by CEO and president of SLIIT Prof. Lalith Gamage, along with other distinguished members of the faculty.

The challenge was organized by the Faculty of Business Student’s Community of SLIIT. The winning team members were awarded OCTA Nero and Jazz smartphones, cash prizes and the EWIS Power banks.
