‘Kite Sri Lanka Organization’, the organizers of the National Kite Festival in Sri Lanka was founded in 2008 when they organized a kite festival at the Negombo Beach Park. From 2009 onwards, Kite Sri Lanka Organization has played a prominent role in popularizing Kite flying as a recreational activity and as a sport amongst the masses by organizing kite festivals named “Nil Ahase Wasanthaya” island wide.

Kite Sri Lanka Organization was able to engage people positively towards contemporary social issues with kite festivals based on specific thematic areas such as National Heredity, Sri Lankan Culture and Drug Prevention. Broadening its scope, it introduced kite fighting competitions, kite fashion shows, kite workshops, kids’ kite camps and kite film festivals. It also held sand castle competitions which is considered a sub culture along the coastal areas and conducted international kite festivals / competitions and eventually was able to convey the Sri Lankan national identity to the international arena by means of a kite.

Italy, France, Malaysia, India, Dubai, Turkey, Korea, Singapore are amongst few countries that they shared the Sri Lankan kite culture. Further, Kite Sri Lanka Organization closely works with the tourism industry and plays a pivotal role in providing specialized knowledge and judgements for the kite festivals organized by prominent hotel networks, government entities, private organizations, television channels, schools and different social organizations.

It is the dawn of the kite season for the year 2016. It is the time for our beloved kids who are eagerly waiting to fly kites during the August school vacation. Kite Sri Lanka takes pleasure to invite our kids and kite fans to put a hold to your boring tuition classes for a while, to move your eyes away from the text books, to give a little break to busily ringing mobile phones and televisions, and to join and experience the Kite Spring. Kite Sri Lanka warmly welcomes you to the 9th National Kite Festival: Nil Ahase Wasanthaya with X2, on 28th August 2016 at the Negombo Beach Park.

The kite competition will be open for both children and open groups. Children under 14 years can participate for two events namely “The Most Creative Kite” and “The Nature Kite” (kites made under the theme of nature).

The open category consists of three events including “The Most Creative Kite”, “The Nature Kite” (kites made under the theme nature) and “The Best Fighting Kite”. Fighting kites should be made into ‘Combuwa’ or ‘Waula’ style and its size should not exceed 1 1/2 feet.

The festival will also feature a sand castle competition under the theme of “World Peace”. A mixed team (male and female) of 5 or less members will be eligible for the competition. Registration desk for all the events will be opened from 8:30am – 11:30 am on the festival day. All the winners will receive certificates, trophies and gifts for their remarkable skills and performances.

You also can enjoy the festival without contesting for any competition. It will be an interactive day filled with kite camps, magic displays, face painting, fun games, DJ, films and music. The festival will also become colourful and interactive with popular artists from the Sri Lankan music and cinema industries, sports stars and a number of special guests being present. You will get the opportunity to spend time leisurely with them while chatting and taking photographs. It will be an event for the whole family to enjoy the day together and to receive gifts from the sponsors and the Kite Sri Lanka Organization.

Last year the kite festival was held in Gall Face Green while Kite Sri Lanka contributed to organize and judge a kite festival for a prominent international hotel network located in Hambanthota at the beginning of the year 2016. Kite Sri Lanka Organization conducts a number of Kite Festivals and workshops all over the country and their hope is to continue these programmes to the future as well.
