‘Transforming Sri Lanka towards a greener tomorrow’
The Blue Mountain Group (BMG) recently reiterated its commitment to protecting the planet and spearheading national reforestation efforts by initiating the ‘Transforming Sri Lanka towards a greener tomorrow’ project. Conceptualized by BMG as part of its long-term efforts to be a responsible corporate citizen, the project will be conducted in partnership with the Forest Department of Sri Lanka to ensure the reforestation of 125 acres of land in Wilpotha over the next ten years.
The official partnership agreement between both parties was signed by Dr.Hiran Hettiarachchi – Group Chairman, Blue Mountain Group and S.A.A Sathurusinghe – Director General of the Forest Department, in the presence of Government officials, the management and staff from both organizations and representatives from the planting zones.
Commenting on the partnership, Dr. Hiran Hettiarachchi (MBBS-Colombo & MBA-Australia), Group Chairman of Blue Mountain said: “The Blue Mountain Group is the first private-sector company in the country to partner with the Forest Department to implement an environmental project of this scale and magnitude. The project was conceptualized to assist and support national reforestation efforts and is a non-commercial initiative that we hope will to protect our planet and the environment. We are honoured to join hands with the Forest Department, to make our dream for a greener Sri Lanka a reality.”
‘Transforming Sri Lanka towards a greener tomorrow’ was established in Wilpotha (situated in the Puttalam district), in keeping with national forest enhancement strategies. The project will help to safeguard some of Sri Lanka’s endangered forest sites, and in doing so will protect the rich biodiversity of flora and fauna that these unique habitats support. The project will ensure the removal of invasive plants and will facilitate the planting of a variety of native plant species, especially those that have been identified as endangered. The project team will also attempt to counter deforestation that is caused by illegal felling, fires and farming – all of which cause soil erosion and have a detrimental impact on these forest areas and the environment at large.
The project will have a multitude of environmental benefits whilst ensuring effective biodiversity conservation and habitat management on a large scale in key forest zones. The initiative will also support eco-tourism, and will attract more travellers to the Wilpotha Reserve, who will be able to see a rich variety of plants, wildlife and birds due to the continued protection of their natural habitat. Additionally, the project will also play a significant role in contributing to national carbon sequestration efforts, which are part of a long-term plan to reduce the country’s overall carbon footprint.

Sri Lankan shares fall for third straight session; John Keells down
Reuters – Sri Lankan shares fell for a third straight session on Thursday, posting their lowest close in a month, dragged down by diversified stocks such as John Keells Holdings Plc as investor sentiment continued to remain low on concerns about rising interest rates.
The Colombo stock index ended down 0.1 percent at 6,088.80, its lowest since Feb. 6. It shed 0.6 percent last week in its second straight weekly decline.
Foreign investors were net buyers for the seventh straight session on Thursday, purchasing shares worth 63.6 million rupees ($420,495.87), and extending the year-to-date net foreign inflow to 1.95 billion rupees worth of equities.
Turnover was 875.6 million rupees, more than this year’s daily average turnover of 689.7 million rupees.
“The market is mainly down because of John Keells. It is slowly coming down with rising rates and economic uncertainty,” said Dimantha Mathew, head of research at First Capital Equities (Pvt) Ltd.
“Foreigners seem to be the only buyers at the moment.”
Traders said there were concerns after the International Monetary Fund urged Sri Lanka’s central bank to be ready to tighten monetary policy if credit growth or inflation does not abate.
Shares of John Keells Holdings fell 1.06 percent while Commercial Bank of Ceylon Plc, the country’s biggest listed lender, declined 1.29 percent and Carson Cumberbatch Plc dropped 2.91 percent.
Sri Lanka Telecom Plc dropped 1.41 percent and Hatton National Bank Plc ended 1.16 percent weaker.
Yields on treasury bills have risen to a more than four-year high since October, while the central bank has kept key policy rates on hold.

A book launch where silence reigned
“Turn you attention inward. Become aware of your posture, how you sit on the chair. Notice all your body sensations, notice any tensions that may be present, gently relax those places, relax your whole body, be totally comfortable in your posture… Now look closely for thoughts that may arise in your mind. If they are linked to the past or future just let them go by becoming aware… You might experience a sense of silence and then you will notice that you are breathing. There must be movement for the mind to notice. Please observe the whole process of breathing without interfering, without forcing it in any way… as you do this, whenever you notice that you are thinking of something else please bring your attention back to breathing…keep doing this exercise…”
Following these instructions, the whole audience, a cross section of corporate leaders experienced the bliss of being totally silent for some time, perhaps for the first time in life during the very unique corporate event organized to launch the book Inward Bound for Mindful Living as a Sarasavi Publication by Deepal Sooriyaarachchi. Deepal is a seasoned corporate executive, now fully committed to the purpose of developing managers while serving a number of blue chip boards. Union Ball Room of JAIC Hilton was filled to capacity on the 16th February by those who responded to Deepal’s invitation to discover how mindfulness, the simple skill of becoming aware of what happens here now and observing them non-judgmentally, can improve corporate performance and happiness.
It was a book launch with a difference with complete focus on the audience, which echoed the likes of an evening lecture series organized by a professional institute. The formal presenting of the book was replaced by a lineup of excellent presentations by eminent speakers.
Having referred to the origins of Mindfulness to Buddha’s teaching, Dr Tara De Mel educated the audience on how in the last decade the scientific community had discovered immense benefits of the practice of mindfulness with undisputable evidence, recorded in over 500 peer reviewed articles in leading scientific journals. Referring to a large number of scientific research publications she took the audience through as to how the practice of mindfulness definitely affects all the systems of the human physiology with positive benefits. She used the secular definition of mindfulness popularized by John Kabat Zin of USA “Paying Attention on Purpose in the present Moment non-judgmentally” in sharing the various scientific aspects. She went on to say how the mindfulness revolution began when His Holiness Dalai Lama challenged Professor Richard Davidson (Neuroscientist – Founder of the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin, Madison) to research about the positive emotion and their impact on the human brain. Accordingly Mindfulness has gained recognition and has got introduced to many fields including medicine, education, management and business. One of the key points that took the audience’s attention was the “Mindful Nation” policy that has been adopted by the British Parliament in a bipartisan move.
“Deepal first introduced this book at PIM when it was a UK publication with his adopted pen name Deepal Soori and in fact he has become a “shuri” (expert) in showing us the importance of a very important aspect we tend to ignore in our hustle and bustle of busy life, which is to be Mindful,” was how Prof Ajantha Dharmasiri commenced his presentation. He eloquently argued for the immense benefit of the practice of Mindfulness to be effective Managers. He iterated that the invitation to travel “inward bound” is timely as most Managers consider being productive by being faster and busier; as a result being more stressful rather than being smarter. He invited the Managers to consider the four foundations of Mindfulness discussed in Sati Pattana Sutta, as the basis for peak performance.
President Counsel Prasantha Lal De Alwis, an eminent criminal lawyer, structurally reviewed the book to show how Insightful, Practical, Theoretical, Readable, and Logical it was, while also being affordable. He observed the unusual structure of the book and emphasized that this book has been obviously written by someone who walks the talk as evidenced by the simplicity with which some deep insights are brought out.
Deepal used the opportunity to recall with gratitude all those who helped him to rise up in life and particularly those who helped in publishing the book. He explained how we are Distracted, Confused and Stressed today more than ever and how the simple practice of mindfulness can make a world of difference to everyone who can develop the skill by spending a few minutes a day. He revealed that he had been practicing mindfulness since 1980, integrating it into his life long before the current awareness on the subject. “In Mindfulness we learn to bring our attention to notice what goes on in this moment, the only moment we can observe, without getting involved – just like a CCTV camera.” While appreciating all the health and other benefits valued by the scientific community, Deepal said that gaining those benefits through mindfulness is like using a Backhoe Machine to uproot a Banana Plant! “The real benefit is getting to know yourself! Please read my book, but the most important book you must read is YOUR LIFE,” emphasized Deepal. During his presentation he conducted a guided mindfulness practice session as well.
Young ad man, Shaveen Bandaranayake facilitated the whole programme weaving in the clips of the “Inward Bound for Mindful Living” hosted by him for ARTV. He had selected clips that brought out some fascinating insights shared by Deepal through some powerful analogies such as ‘Our mind is like a meeting without an agenda or a chair person’. He vouched on how he had benefited from the practice of mindfulness as a result of getting the opportunity to host the show.
INWARDBOUND ROAD MAP
- Inward Bound for Mindful Living Season 2 will begin on ARTV in Mid March.

Following the completion of national procurement procedures the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development announced that Fairway Waste Management (Pvt) Ltd and K C H T Lanka Jang (Pvt) Ltd had been selected to carry out the task of converting waste into energy at the given locations of Karadiyana and Muthurajawela respectively.

Renault Kwid Climber Launched at Rs 4.3 Lakh, Now More ‘SUV’ Than Before
Renault has launched the Climber edition of the Kwid at a price tag of Rs 4.30 lakh for the 5-speed manual transmission variant. The AMT-equipped variant has been priced at Rs 4.60 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).
Renault India has witnessed strong sales with their popular entry-level hatchback Kwid and the demand for the vehicle has resulted in several additions and updates to the model line-up in India. The company first came out with a more powerful, 1.0-litre engine equipped, Kwid SCe and then added an AMT transmission variant in the form of the Kwid Easy-R.
One of the biggest reasons why the Kwid has been so popular is because of the SUV-inspired styling and when Renault showcased a more SUV-focused concept variant at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo, it had everyone talking about it. So much so, that the concept is now a production model.
Speaking on the launch of Kwid CLIMBER, Sumit Sawhney, Country CEO and Managing Director, Renault India Operations, said, “Renault Kwid is a great success, revolutionising the compact hatchback segment in India. The Renault Kwid Climber has been developed keeping in mind specific customer needs and caters to diverse audiences, becoming the perfect offering for young achievers who are moving up places steadfastly.”
Designed and developed by Renault’s design studios in Mumbai and Chennai, the company says that the Kwid Climber concept proves the highest degree in which the KWID can be customised.
Changes include updated exteriors and interiors. The Climber is available in three colour options – Electric Blue, Outback Bronze and Planet Grey.
It will only be available with the 1.0-litre petrol engine, in the top-end RXT(O) variant. Bookings for the car have commenced across all Renault dealerships in India.
It is basically a cosmetic job on the Kwid and comes with orange accents throughout the body and the cabin. There have been no mechanical updates in the car and no technological additions either, unlike the model displayed at the Auto Expo. A decision that could have been taken to have an accessible price tag on the Climber edition.
Overall, it gives the car a more SUV-like appearance which has been the Kwid’s biggest attraction. What remains to be seen is how the market reacts to the introduction of this model as the car sees a price bump of almost Rs 30,000 over the top-end Kwid already on sale. Watch this space for updates.

Sri Lankan shares hit 5-wk closing low on rate hike fears
Reuters – Sri Lankan shares hit a five-week closing low on Monday on worries the country’s central bank would raise interest rates at a meeting next week after the International Monetary Fund urged it to tighten monetary policy, brokers said.
The Colombo stock index closed 0.23 percent down at 6,070.80, its lowest since Feb. 6. The index shed 0.27 percent last week, posting its third straight weekly decline.
The IMF last week urged Sri Lanka’s central bank to be ready to tighten monetary policy if credit growth or inflation does not abate.
The banking regulator is expected to unveil its second monetary policy of the year on March 24.
“The IMF statement on urging the central bank for a possible rate hike has weighed on sentiment,” said Hussain Gani, deputy CEO at Softlogic Stockbrokers.
Shares of conglomerate John Keells Holding Plc fell 1 percent, while biggest listed lender Commercial Bank of Ceylon Plc ended 1.09 percent weaker.
Foreign investors net bought shares worth 61 million rupees (about $403,041), a ninth straight session of purchases, extending the year-to-date net foreign inflow to 2.18 billion rupees worth of equities.
Turnover stood at 183.3 million rupees, the lowest since Feb.1 and well below this year’s daily average turnover of 679.6 million rupees.
Yields on treasury bills have risen to a more-than-four-year high since October despite the central bank keeping key policy rates steady.

Shangri-La hikes Sri Lankan investment by 60 pct to $800 mln
Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Asia has increased its investment in Sri Lankan properties by 60 percent to $800 million, in order to meet demand for larger-than-planned apartments in Colombo, an official said on Monday.
The international hotel brand had originally planned to invest $500 million in a 541-room hotel and 390 apartments in Colombo and another 300-room resort in the island nation’s southern district of Hambantota.
“Investment has increased because of the project enhancement,” Neluka de Alwis, head of sales and marketing at Shangri-La Hotels Lanka (Private) Limited, told Reuters.
The company has changed the design of the apartments due to demand for larger units, de Alwis added.
Shangri-La, in 2012, had estimated that the total cost of the project could climb by 10 percent to $550 million due to last-minute design changes.
De Alwis said the Colombo hotel was expected to be completed by 2017, later than an initial target of 2015, while the apartments, shopping complex and conference facilities would be finished by 2018.
Shangri-La has already opened the resort in Hambantota, where Sri Lanka is considering creating a special economic zone for Chinese investors.
The 300-room Hambantota resort on 145 acres of beach-front land is the first of the two luxury property projects in Sri Lanka that the Hong Kong-listed group has planned in a bid to cash in on the boom in tourist arrivals following the end of the country’s 26-year war nearly eight years ago.
Sri Lanka’s tourist arrivals and revenue from tourism hit record highs in 2016.
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts currently manages 99 hotels around the world under the Shangri-La brand with a room inventory of over 40,000.
