Emerald International, Sri Lanka’s best known manufacturer of menswear, recently extended its support to the national effort against COVID-19 with a donation of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to the medical teams on the front lines. The PPE, developed by Emerald International in keeping with international tech protocols for protective gear, were manufactured using internationally recognized high quality material. Comprising both gowns and headgear, they were designed to ensure comfort, durability and protection. The kits, which come with 1901 fibre content and are made from 100% polyester, were handed over by Mr. M M M Ihsan, Executive Director of Emerald International at a simple ceremony held recently. It was also the occasion for the launch of Emerald International’s premium grade NMRA (National Medicines Regulatory Authority)-approved ‘PROTECT by Emerald’ face masks. The masks were specially developed, using Emerald’s expertise and know-how acquired over 60 years in the market as Sri Lanka’s leading manufacturer of menswear. The PROTECT by Emerald face masks are developed using a high calibre 5-ply reusable fabric with a BFE (Bacterial Filtration Efficiency) of 98%. Its melt blown filter middle layer is capable of producing a microbial cleanliness value that falls within the medically endorsed range. The masks are equipped with a water repellent outer layer along with an inner layer made of vapour absorbing fabric that takes the moisture away from the body. Hence, the masks, classed as water repellent and breathable are designed to fit the facial structure with a comfortable 3D shape devised evenly to minimize voice distortion. In a gesture of goodwill, Emerald International also took the opportunity to fete Dr. Anil Jasinghe for his exceptional commitment towards the fight against COVID-19. Dr Jasinghe was gifted with an exclusive ‘The Perfect Shirt’ by Mr. Emraan Mohamed, Marketing Manager of Emerald International. The Perfect Shirt Collection , under the banner “Perfect Shirt for the Perfect Hero” epitomizes the heroic undertaking of the nation’s first responders in mitigating the COVID-19 epidemic. Elder abuse is real: How are we mitigating the risks?

$

Medical conditions are inevitable once the human body begins to age. They arrive with their complexities which can affect our elders physically and emotionally. However, we can support our loved ones with the arising conditions by ensuring they are taken care of with dignity and love. At English Nursing Care, eldercare is redefined with compassion and reliability towards caregiving where Nurses are trained to support clients with comfort and security. The Problem A study conducted by the World Health Organisation, taking evidence from 52 studies in 28 diverse countries, indicates that 15.7% individuals i.e.  one in six individuals, aged 60 years and above, have been subject to some form for physical, psychological, financial or sexual abuse over the past year. This is inclusive of neglect by their own family members. Sri Lanka at high risk According to the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) of Sri Lanka, the global economy expects a rise in aging population – from 814 million people in 2013 to more than 2 billion in 2050 – with Sri Lanka having one of the fastest aging demographics (1 in 4 persons will be over 65 years by 2041). This makes elder abuse a rising risk on senior citizens in Sri Lanka. Research from the North Colombo Teaching Hospital records 38.5% out-patients at risk of abuse. Survey taken by elders highlight 45% reporting verbal abuse and neglect. Whilst 5.6% report physical abuse. However, a substantial number of elders refrain from reporting such misconduct due to fear, shame or mental illnesses. Why elder abuse? In most cases, it is cultural for children in Asia to continue living with their parents. The increasing pace of life simultaneously increases stress which caregivers tend to release on elders. This is vile and unacceptable. Enrolling parents to elder’s homes or employing staff to take care of them is the most sought solution. However, WHO recognises that homes and staff perpetrated 64.2% of the abuse. Insufficient care, depriving them of dignity, incorrect medication are common. Exemplar Evidence Recent events of the sorrowful and mysterious demise of 78 – year – old, Miss Ceylon 1962 – Jennifer Ingleton, is exemplar of such misconduct. Jennifer, who fell ill with age and was under the care of unknown forces; as her relatives were abroad. According to Jennifer’s half -brother, these forces prevented friends and family to communicate with her and were left unaware regarding her health and well-being. A close friend reported, upon one of her visits to see Jennifer in her ill-state, these individuals would suspiciously evade her from asking too many questions regarding her medical procedures or requesting a Doctor to check-up on her progress. Therefore, recognition and reconciliation by choosing the right care practises and institutions for your elders is key. How is English Nursing Care different? Old age requires engaging and comprehensive care. English Nursing Care understands the significance of this responsibility. Thus, ‘Care plans’ are created where caregivers are trained to deliver personalised support, by Nurses bringing over 30 years of experience from the UK, to take care of your loved one in the comfort of their home. Thorough knowledge on medical history, current medication dosage and emergencies is pivotal. Staff update family on the progress of the client every week or as requested. Nurses at English Nursing care are trained to inculcate the latest methodologies in their practise with focus on delivering quality care with empathy. A review process is held every month to warrant the service given to your loved ones. With neglect and abuse arrives the unfortunate consequences of dejection, anxiety and hopelessness. Encompassing a jovial and optimistic care system for elders at this phase is vital to live a healthy life. Care staff play a crucial role in fostering so. English Nursing Care is an advocate of celebrating life and takes pride in the holistic service they offer with guaranteed peace of mind for the elderly client as well as family often living far away. Sri Lanka ‘Women-led Startups’ braving C19 now vie for next level

How good is betting on a South Asian startup incubator dojo aimed at would-be-entrepreneur females with only a burning passion for their crafts and launched in the smack middle of the gloomy pandemic? Wagered by Hatch Works, the knowledge and growth hub for Sri Lanka’s nascent startups, a “business development program” series called “Kickass Bootcamp” has been creating quite a buzz. It has now anchored itself in the country’s startup ecosystem since its capricious birthing in the smack middle of the Pandemic just five months back. With three events in its series already under its belt since the pandemic, 30 female entrepreneurs linking to each other, and transforming to a strong network of women affecting changes across different parts of Sri Lanka, the month-long “Hatch Kickass Bootcamp” and its participants is worth a closer look. By its third run, the Bootcamp was boarding female founders from such a diverse range of startup dreams as DV+ Architecture (architecture, design and project management services consultancy), Butterfly Effect Training Partners (a personal growth and grooming startup), The Cake Box and Platter It Up (two food-based businesses), Shoba Garments (a second-gen clothing manufacturer), Candle House Ceylon (hand-made scented candles), Kikasho Twins (visual thinking startup), Yoga with Aisha (wellness) and Apé (a wellness and lifestyle brand). Speaking on her company’s growth since the completion of the Bootcamp, Shobija Luxmikanthan, now managing Shoba Garments-her mother’s company in Vavuniya -says that their immediate goal was to survive the Coronavirus. “Keeping our social media activities during the pandemic lockdown was essential. I regularly advertised on Facebook and Instagram and kept my followers updated on the new designs we were working on, so as to not to lose momentum. I also targeted niche customer segments, which helped me generate new orders. The Kickass Bootcamp also helped me look into the prospects of expanding into the local market by collaborating with well-established brands for a higher reach”.  The pandemic necessarily did not mean bad for all…for some, it ushered in a new start. Aisha Wahab and Himali de Silva, started Yoga with Aisha and Apé, their respective startups. Aisha founded an online yoga class by leveraging her hobbies into use to keep herself occupied during the early days of the pandemic. She gradually began growing her platform through Instagram by posting content that created a strong brand through visuals. What started as an online-based class has grown to a business. Aisha soon learned through the Bootcamp that if she wants to sustain her business, she will have to switch from a virtual model to an in-person class, which she now plans to launch in September 2020. Himali de Silva founded Apé at the start of lockdown. Tired with the linear consumption, Himali aims to educate and transform people towards adopting a circular economy. Apé predominantly uses Instagram and currently functions as a virtual marketplace. Himali says the Bootcamp helped educate her on previously not thought of areas of her business and helped her refine her business model for its longevity.  Bhagya Iddamalgoda, of Candle House Ceylon, has been having a successful candle business for the past few years using Facebook and Instagram to market her products. However, after joining the Kickass Bootcamp, she mentioned that after a few years of running her business, she needed guidance on changing and navigating the next phase, which included managing her finances and social media as well as streamlining her operations. “The Kickass Bootcamp helped me understand the business landscape as a whole and I have since taken steps to get needed certifications and contracts in place when dealing with both B2B and B2C transactions.” Nima Faiz, founder of catering startup Platter It Up, says: “I was confused about where my business was headed in the long term, hiring, and general finances. Kickass really cleared things up for me because I never had a business plan, and I never really gave much thought about finances at a deeper level or my business in general in such depth. Kickass made me take a step back and analyze my business in a way that I’ve never done before. From managing social media, thinking about growth, and making finances less scary.” A trend that was seen during the pandemic was the growing demand for cakes and confectionaries as people were locked in their homesteads. Murshida Iqbal, the founding owner of Kandy based The Cakebox, is positive that since her business is based on catering to those who have a sweet tooth it would sustain. Murshida manages her own social media as she sees herself as the best person to put her love and effort that goes into baking her cakes, into words. “My photography skills needed improvement, and the Bootcamp taught me how to. Also  to manage my finances and also measure my social media growth…” she says. Kithmi Weerantunga runs Kikasho by Twins with her twin sister Kalasi. Their Instagram resonates with the authenticity of twins, and since the pandemic, the twins are even more keener on building a business that resonates “with the love and warmth they provide” through their venture. The twins went on to add that they leverage their brand through social media, especially by putting out visually creative posts and collaborating with influencers who would add value to their businesses. “The Bootcamp helped us a lot in terms of managing our finances” they agree. Tiza De Vas, who owns and runs DV+ Co. Architecture, says: “As a consultancy, skill, knowledge, and experience are large components of what we offer here at DV+. All these are qualitative, but a quantifiable way need for pricing. Kickass gave us the tools to build a sustainable pricing strategy.” Fazla Razak & Ranmali Wickramasinghe of Butterfly Effect Training Partners had a bigger vision for their startup. “The pandemic inspired us to open up our social media pages for the business. The program gave us the foresight needed to expand into different markets and regions as well as on utilizing social media to market us” they say. The Kickass Bootcamp will be on its fourth successive run now scheduled for September 2020. If you are a female entrepreneur and need extra guidance -and also like to be part of an amazing group of women –then fire an email now to sasmini@hatch.lk to apply.

SLINTEC and EDB join hands to export COVID-19-related products

COVID-19 has created unexpected market opportunities for medical-related industries around the globe, providing openings for innovative entrepreneurs to exploit. While no doubt the crisis suppressed the exports of certain sectors, it also shed a light on emerging opportunities for domestic exporters to capitalize on; in particular PCR testing components and anti-microbial coatings. The Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC) and the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) took advantage of this timely opportunity to enhance the export production capacity of such nascent sectors. Both SLINTEC and the EDB entered into an agreement through which the EDB supports SLINTEC to obtain FDA registration and CE certifications for their innovative, export-ready Covid-19 product range. Exploiting COVID-19-related market opportunities, SLINTEC ventured to innovate and commercialize two new products with high export potential:  SLINTEC Swabs and SLINTEC Sterile. A spike in global testing has increased the demand for test kits and the widely administered PCR test kit requires a nasal swab for sample collection. SLINTEC has reverse engineered COVID-19 testing swabs and has been producing them in-collaboration with the Medical Research Institute of Sri Lanka, the Lady Ridgeway Hospital, and Hi-Fashion Holdings Pvt limited. SLINTEC sterile is an antimicrobial nanocoating that can be applied on numerous surfaces without tarnishing its aesthetical appearance. This technology can eradicate microorganisms on the coating applied surface as well as the surrounding air with its protective effect lasting up to six months. The product can be commercialized via hotels, hospitals, airports, residential houses, offices, and supermarkets. SLINTEC, with its export production capabilities for Swabs and Sterile, has identified interested buyers in the European and US markets. The last bridge to gap was to obtain FDA (US market) and CE (EU markets) certifications for export market compliance. Seeking assistance to bridge that final gap, SLINTEC reached out to the EDB with a proposal to obtain assistance for market compliance certifications. The EDB National Quality Infrastructure (NQI) Advisory Committee has been a leading driving force of the Sri Lanka NQI strategy – a vital trade support function of the Sri Lanka National Export Strategy (NES). Given its strong alignment to the NES objectives of strengthening foreign market entry compliance requirements and the critical need to adapt to Covid-19 market needs, SLINTEC’s proposal was approved by the committee members. Through the provisions of the NES 2020 budget, then Ministry of Industrial Exports and Investment Promotion allocated a 5-million-rupee financial assistance to the EDB to facilitate this timely endeavour with SLINTEC.
