Holy Family Convent- Kurunagala crowned as Airtels’ Netball Champions of 2016

In yet another exhilarating ending to the ‘All Island School Games Netball Championship 2016’ sponsored Airtel, Holy Family Convent- Kurunagala continued their winning streak yet again this year by securing the overall titled to be crowned as Airtels’ Netball Champions of 2016 in both Under 19 and 17 age groups.

The Under 19 Familians were able to do so by beating Presbyterian B.V- Dehiwala (31-23) who showed great grit in the 1st half of the game while youngsters beat Hillwood College- Kandy (21-12).

In the first semifinals between the Familians from Kurunagala and Kalutara in the Under-15 age group, Holy Family Convent- Kurunagala secured an easy win against its sister school while Maliyadeva B.V- Kurunagala beat Visakha Vidyalaya- Colombo 05 to come into the finals. Maliyadeva B.V- Kurunagala proved to be the better team in North Western Province as they beat HFC- Kurunagala 14-12 in the finals.

Hillwood College- Kandy was the only school in the Central Province that was able to secure a place in the finals in the Under-17 age group, as they beat Visakha Vidyalaya- Colombo 05 by 2 points while Girls High School- Kandy lost to Holy Family Convent- Kurunagala in the semifinals.

Sacred Heart Convent’s dream of entering into the finals was again shattered by Holy Family Convent- Kurunagala who beat them by a large margin (33-08) to meet Presbyterian B.V- Dehiwala who showed some brilliant skills to be the only school in the Western province to come into the finals. This is also the first time that the Presbyterians were able to achieve this result.

Under 15-
1. Maliyadeva B.V- Kurunagala
2. Holy Family Convent- Kurunagala
3. Holy Family Convent- Kalutara
Most outstanding player- Sandali Madampage – Maliyadeva B.V- Kurunagala

Under 17-
1. Holy Family Convent- Kurunagala
2. Hillwood College- Kandy
3. Visakha Vidyalaya- Colombo 05
Most outstanding player- Suseema Kumari – Holy Family Convent- Kurunagala
Under 19-
1. Holy Family Convent- Kurunagala
2. Presbyterian B.V- Dehiwala
3. Sacred Hearts Convent- Galle
Most outstanding player- S.S. Sathya- Holy Family Convent- Kurunagala

The tournament which was conducted by the Departments of Health, Physical Education and Sports of the Ministry of Education, was graced by Honourable Akila Viraj Kariyawasam – Minister for Education, who was also the chief guest of the evening.
