Professional leaving Sri Lanka for foreign employment do not benefit the economy of the country, said Central bank Governor Dr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy during a media conference today (09 May).
According to the categories leaving for foreign employment, migration of professionals has grown by 5.1 per cent, while those leaving for foreign employment under the categories of skilled, semi-skilled, unskilled workers has dropped by 8.6 per cent, states the Central Bank’s report for 2016.
The Governor made this comment as a response to a question whether professionals leaving for foreign employment benefit the country.
“Professionals like doctors and engineers who leave for foreign employment generally do not remit any money. There has been an increase in the number of semi-skilled workers. They mostly leave for Korea or South East Asian countries. As a result there is a shortage of semi-skilled workers in Sri Lanka,” said Central Bank Governor Dr. Coomaraswamy while adding that Sri Lanka’s economy does not benefit from professional leaving the country for foreign employment and that they should be brought back to Sri Lanka again.
