Sri Lanka’s Maritime Revolution – A Must-Do Strategy to Unlock Global Trade Power from the Heart of the Indian Ocean

By Jithendra Antonio Navigating a New Era in Global Trade Sri Lanka, an island that has stood as a strategic maritime crossroads for millennia, now finds itself at the cusp of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, the chance to once again redefine its role in global commerce. With its perfect position at the heart of international sea lanes, this island nation is uniquely poised to become the next great global maritime hub. Yet, while its history speaks of thriving ancient ports and influential sea routes, the question remains—will Sri Lanka seize this moment, or let it slip away? In a world increasingly dominated by Asian trade flows, Sri Lanka’s time to rise as a global maritime powerhouse is now. The potential is immense. However, to realize this potential, Sri Lanka must harness its legacy while embracing cutting-edge technological advancements in logistics and port infrastructure. This article examines how Sri Lanka can become the maritime linchpin of the 21st century by integrating lessons from its past, taking bold actions today, and setting its course toward an economically prosperous future. The Ancient Mariner’s Legacy – Sri Lanka’s Maritime History Sri Lanka’s maritime story stretches over recorded history of five millennia and beyond to the days of Ramayanaya, an enduring testament to its role as an economic and cultural bridge between East and West. From ancient cinnamon traders to the bustling port of Mantai, Sri Lanka was, and still is, a maritime nexus. Its ports served as gateways for the spice and silk trade, and its strategic location brought ancient civilizations together. For example, during the 5th century BCE, the island’s ports connected the Roman Empire to the rest of Asia, where goods like spices and gems were in high demand. This historical foundation was further solidified during the colonial era, when the Portuguese, Dutch, and British recognized Sri Lanka’s position as a critical juncture for global shipping. Yet, despite this rich maritime history, Sri Lanka’s ports have failed to evolve with the times in recent decades. Strategic Location – An Overlooked Asset Geographically, Sri Lanka is perfectly placed to serve as the gateway to South Asia and beyond. Positioned just 10 nautical miles off the busiest maritime route between East Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, it is a natural junction for global trade, with 70% of the world’s oil shipments and 50% of container traffic passing Sri Lanka’s southern coastline. Yet despite this, Sri Lanka’s ports—most notably the Port of Colombo—rank far behind regional leaders like Singapore and Dubai in terms of global trade volume. The Hambantota Port, located along this critical shipping lane, is a classic example of unrealized potential. Though it lies in one of the world’s most strategically important locations, it has largely remained underutilized. This is a glaring paradox for an island nation with so much to offer the global logistics market. Case Study – Singapore’s Maritime Success To understand how Sri Lanka can chart its path to maritime dominance, one need look no further than Singapore. As the world’s second-busiest port, Singapore’s success was no accident. Through a robust strategy centered on infrastructure development, transshipment efficiency, and technological innovation, Singapore transformed itself into the maritime powerhouse it is today. In 2022, Singapore handled 37.5 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), ranking second globally. The formula for success is clear: leverage strategic location, invest in cutting-edge infrastructure, and continuously innovate. Sri Lanka can—and must—adopt a similar strategy to tap into its vast potential.   Reinventing Sri Lanka’s Ports – An Actionable Strategy 1 Upgrade Port Infrastructure to Global Standards The Port of Colombo, currently handling the bulk of Sri Lanka’s container traffic, must be expanded to accommodate the larger vessels now dominating global shipping lanes. Colombo South Port, though efficient, is already near capacity. To future-proof the island’s logistics network, it must develop new terminals capable of handling mega-container ships. Meanwhile, the underutilized Hambantota Port must be transformed into a multi-purpose hub that serves not only as a transshipment center but also as a ship repair and maintenance facility. By tapping into break-bulk cargo and vehicle transshipment, Sri Lanka can broaden its logistics capabilities. Practical Action: A phased expansion plan targeting 10 million TEUs by 2030, with strategic partnerships from global players like China Merchants Port and DP World, can elevate Sri Lanka to the top 10 global ports. 2. Focus on Transshipment as a Growth Opportunity Transshipment—the transfer of containers from one ship to another—currently accounts for 80% of Colombo’s port traffic. The goal should be to increase this figure to 90% by 2030, positioning Sri Lanka as the dominant transshipment hub for South Asia. With India’s ports such as Chennai and Mumbai struggling to handle their growing container volumes, Sri Lanka is perfectly positioned to capitalize on this gap. Practical Action: Establish preferential agreements with Indian, Bangladeshi, and African ports to create a seamless, efficient transshipment network. This can be achieved by offering incentives such as lower tariffs and faster processing times at Sri Lanka’s terminals. 3. Embrace Smart Ports and Digital Logistics The future of ports lies not in cranes and containers alone but in the integration of advanced technology. Smart ports, using IoT, AI, and blockchain, streamline operations, reduce costs, and improve throughput. Rotterdam, Europe’s largest port, has employed AI and blockchain to increase processing speeds by 30%. Sri Lanka’s Port of Colombo should initiate a digital upgrade, adopting smart technologies for container tracking, inventory management, and logistics. Practical Action: Implement AI-driven inventory systems, blockchain for cargo verification, and IoT-enabled container tracking to enhance efficiency and transparency by 2027. 4. Leverage the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Sri Lanka must also look to capitalize on global initiatives like China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Hambantota’s integration into China’s maritime corridor could unlock significant trade flows between Asia, Africa, and Europe. However, Sri Lanka must carefully balance this partnership to avoid falling into a debt trap. The focus should be on equitable agreements that align with the nation’s long-term economic interests. Economic Impact and Job Creation – A National Benefit The revitalization of Sri Lanka’s maritime sector won’t just benefit global shipping companies; it will generate thousands of local jobs and significantly contribute to national GDP. Port expansion projects could create over 200,000 direct and indirect jobs, with regions surrounding the ports seeing a significant economic uplift. By 2035, a thriving logistics sector could contribute as much as 12% to Sri Lanka’s GDP, on par with tourism and agriculture. Policy Recommendations – Ensuring Success To ensure these objectives are realized, Sri Lanka must implement a comprehensive, coordinated national strategy:
  • Establish a National Maritime Development Authority to oversee port expansions and ensure international best practices.
  • Form Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) with global firms to fast-track the development of Sri Lanka’s ports.
  • Offer tax incentives to logistics startups working on digital solutions for maritime trade.
  • Establish Maritime Training Academies to develop the next generation of port engineers, analysts, and logisticians.
Riding the Waves of Opportunity Sri Lanka’s maritime revival is more than an economic necessity; it’s a historical opportunity to reclaim its heritage as a global trade center. By reinvesting in its ports, leveraging technology, and capitalizing on its strategic position, Sri Lanka can once again become a leader in global logistics, just as it was in ancient times. The ocean calls—will Sri Lanka answer? If the right steps are taken now, the answer could be a resounding yes, ushering in a new era of prosperity for the nation. The time is now to set sail toward a brighter, more prosperous maritime future. How Coca-Cola Gave Christmas Its Greatest Gift: The Santa We Know

Christmas is synonymous with love, joy, and one more thing—the cheerful, jolly man who has been part of our childhood for as long as we can remember. No matter how old we get, the sight of Santa still stirs up that childlike wonder—whether it’s in festive ads, decorations glowing on streets, or someone dressed in the iconic red suit. Santa has a way of making us believe in magic, all over again. That same magic unfolded for a little boy in the late ’90s—one you may recall from a beloved Coca-Cola commercial. He was the first to spot the bright red trucks rolling into town, bringing with them the unmistakable spirit of Christmas. Excited, he ran all the way to the bell tower, ringing it with all his might to announce their arrival. But by the time he returned, the procession had already passed. The look of disappointment on his face was universal; anyone watching felt it too. Yet, just as hope seemed lost, the last truck rolled by, revealing a familiar bottle—like magic. The boy’s smile returned, but it was the winking Santa on the truck that lingered in everyone’s hearts. That is the thing about Coca-Cola and Santa. It is not just the red and white. It is the nostalgia that comes alive every season. It is the rosy cheeks, snowy beard, and jovial demeanor. It is Santa that embodies the spirit of the season. The much-loved image of Santa we cherish today owes much to Coca-Cola. This holiday season seems like the perfect timing and setting to take a glimpse through the rich history of Santa Claus, exploring how Coca-Cola played a pivotal role in creating the modern-day Santa and celebrating other memorable Christmas moments from the brand. The Origins of Santa Claus The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back to the 4th century with St. Nicholas, a Greek bishop known for his acts of charity, particularly towards children and the poor. His legacy of gift giving laid the foundation for the modern Santa Claus. The name “Santa Claus” though evolved from the Dutch word “Sinterklaas” which was based on St. Nicholas and his charitable deeds.  By the late 18th century, Dutch families celebrated St. Nicholas in New York, and his image began to shift from a solemn bishop to a more jovial figure associated with Christmas festivities. This transformation of Santa continued throughout the 19th century, influenced by various literary works. One significant piece was Clement Clarke Moore’s poem ” Twas the Night before Christmas” published in 1823, which introduced many elements of the Santa mythos we recognize today, such as his sleigh and reindeer. Moore’s depiction of a plump, cheerful man in a red suit set the stage for the Santa we recognize today. Coca-Cola and the Reinvention of Santa Claus Before Coca-Cola’s involvement, Santa Claus had been depicted in various ways—sometimes as a tall gaunt man and an elf —there was even a scary Claus. However, this changed dramatically in 1931 when Coca-Cola commissioned illustrator Haddon Sundblom to create a series of advertisements featuring Santa Claus where he drew inspiration from Moore’s poem. Those paintings established Santa as a warm, happy character with human features, including rosy cheeks, a white beard, twinkling eyes and a red-and-white suit, a color scheme that coincidentally matched Coca-Cola’s branding solidifying this association in popular culture. While other depictions of Santa existed, Sundblom’s version resonated deeply with the public, embedding itself in collective joyous memories. These advertisements were not just illustrations; they told stories. Santa appeared in cozy living rooms, sharing a Coke with children, and even enjoying a refreshing sip himself after a long night of delivering gifts. The message was clear: Coca-Cola was not just a beverage; it was part of the holiday magic. A Toast to Coca-Cola’s Christmas Magic Coca-Cola’s Santa became a cultural icon, appearing in annual holiday campaigns for over three decades. One of the most memorable campaigns featuring Santa Claus was the 1940 ad that depicted him holding a bottle of Coca-Cola while mischievously raiding the refrigerator. This playful portrayal further endeared Santa to audiences intertwining his association with Coca-Cola and Christmas. Even today, Coca-Cola’s “World Needs More Santas” campaign continues to inspire with its powerful message of kindness and generosity. The ad itself beautifully illustrates the idea that Santa’s spirit is not just for the holiday season but is something we can all embody in our daily lives. In this heartwarming commercial, viewers are taken through a series of scenes where groups of Santa Clauses—each acting out small, yet meaningful acts of kindness—help one another in simple, but profound ways. From sharing the last bottle of Coke in a vending machine, to hailing a cab for a person with their hands full, to holding the door open for someone on a crowded train, these Santas embody the spirit of giving that defines the season. As the ad unfolds, the viewer is taken on a beautiful transition from these iconic scenes of holiday cheer to real-life moments, revealing that these “Santas” were not just holiday figures. They were everyday people who chose to share kindness and love, bringing their own version of Santa’s joy into the world. The beauty of the ad lies not just in its visuals, but in the message it sends—that anyone, anywhere, can channel their inner Santa and spread a little bit of magic in the world. Coca-Cola’s relationship with Christmas is a testament to the brand’s ability to create lasting traditions. As we sip on a bottle of Coca-Cola this season, let us remember the joy and kindness that Santa represents. After all, the magic of Christmas lies not just in the presents or the decorations, but also in the moments of connection and generosity that bring us closer together. So, here’s to Coca-Cola—for reminding us that the world could always use more Santas.

Kaspersky explores 2025 potential IT outage and supply chain risk scenarios

As part of its annual Kaspersky Security Bulletin, the company’s experts have analyzed significant supply chain attacks and IT outages from the past year and explored potential future risk scenarios, providing insights aimed at helping businesses of all sizes enhance cybersecurity, build resilience, and prepare for possible emerging threats in 2025. In 2024, supply chain attacks and IT outages emerged as dominant cybersecurity concerns, demonstrating that virtually no infrastructure is immune to risk. A faulty CrowdStrike update affected millions of systems, and sophisticated incidents, such as the XZ backdoor and the Polyfill.io supply chain attack exposed the risks inherent in widely used tools. These and other high-profile cases highlight the need for rigorous security measures, robust patch and update management, and proactive defenses to safeguard global supply chains and infrastructure. In its “Story of the Year”, the Kaspersky Security Bulletin reflects on 2024’s past incidents, while contemplating hypothetical future scenarios, and considering their potential consequences, as follows: What if a major AI provider faced an outage or a data breach? Businesses are increasingly relying on various models such as those from OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic and others. However, despite the excellent user experience these integrations offer, they introduce significant cyber risks. Reliance on a single or limited number of AI service providers creates concentrated points of failure. If a major AI company experiences a critical disruption, it could significantly impact dozens or even thousands of services that depend on them. Furthermore, an incident at any major AI provider could result in one of the most severe data leaks, as these systems may store vast amounts of sensitive information. What if on-device AI tools were exploited? As AI becomes more integrated into everyday devices, the risk of it becoming an attack vector grows significantly. For instance, the Operation Triangulation campaign, uncovered by Kaspersky last year, demonstrated how attackers could compromise device integrity by exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities in the system software and hardware to deploy advanced spyware. Similar potential software or hardware-assisted vulnerabilities in the neural processing units powering AI – both broadly and in specific platforms like Apple Intelligence – could, if discovered, extend or present an even greater threat. Exploiting such weaknesses could harness AI capabilities to significantly amplify the scope and impact of such attacks. Kaspersky’s research into Operation Triangulation also revealed the first of its kind case reported by the company: the misuse of on-device machine learning for data extraction, highlighting that the features designed to enhance user experience are already being weaponized by sophisticated threat actors. What if threat actors disrupted satellite connectivity? While the space industry in general has been encountering various cyberattacks for a while, the new target for threat actors may be satellite internet providers as important elements of the global connectivity chain. Satellite internet can provide temporary communication links when other systems are down; airlines, ships, and other platforms may rely on it to provide onboard connectivity; it may also be used to enable secure communication services. This presents cyber risks: a targeted cyberattack or a faulty update from a leading or dominant satellite provider could cause internet outages and potential communication breakdowns, impacting individuals and organizations. What if major physical threats to the Internet occurred? Continuing the topic of connectivity, the internet is also vulnerable to physical threats. 95% of global data is transmitted through subsea cables, and there are nearly 1,500 Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) – physical locations, sometimes within data centers, where different networks exchange traffic.  A disruption to just a few critical components of this chain – such as key cables or IXPs – could overload the remaining infrastructure, potentially causing widespread outages and significantly impacting global connectivity. What if severe vulnerabilities in Windows and Linux kernel were exploited? These operating systems power many of the world’s critical assets, including servers, manufacturing equipment, logistics systems, IoT devices, and others. A remotely exploitable kernel vulnerability in these systems could expose countless devices and networks worldwide to potential attacks, creating a high-risk situation in which global supply chains could face significant disruption. Supply chain risks may seem overwhelming, but awareness is the first step toward prevention,” said Igor Kuznetsov, Director of Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT) Kaspersky. “By testing updates rigorously, leveraging AI-driven anomaly detection, and diversifying providers to reduce single points of failure, we can reduce weak elements and build resilience. A culture of responsibility among personnel is equally vital, as human vigilance remains the cornerstone of security. Together, these measures can safeguard supply chains and ensure a more secure future”. Read more on Securelist. Threat Research The Threat Research team is a leading authority in protecting against cyberthreats. By actively engaging in both threat analysis and technology creation, our TR experts ensure that Kaspersky’s cybersecurity solutions are deeply informed and exceptionally potent, providing critical threat intelligence and robust security to our clients and the broader community.

Mitsubishi Motors to explore participation or involvement in the consideration of business integration

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (“Nissan”), Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (“Honda”), and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (“Mitsubishi Motors”) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore the possibility of Mitsubishi Motors’ participation, involvement, and synergy sharing in relation to the business integration through the establishment of a joint holding company outlined in an MOU signed between Nissan and Honda.

Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi Motors have reached a basic agreement to proceed with discussions based on the framework established in the MOU signed by Nissan and Honda on August 1 regarding the commencement of a strategic partnership focused on intelligence and electrification. Mitsubishi Motors has been participating in this framework, and the three companies have been proceeding with discussions.

Following the agreement between Nissan and Honda to start consideration toward a business integration through the establishment of a joint holding company amid the dramatic changes in the environment surrounding both companies and the automotive industry, the three companies have agreed to explore the possibility of achieving synergies at an increased level through Mitsubishi Motors’ participation or involvement in the business integration. Mitsubishi Motors aims to reach its conclusion by the end of January 2025 on the participation or involvement in the business integration between Nissan and Honda.

Marking the announcement, Nissan Director, President, CEO and Representative Executive Officer Makoto Uchida said: “Honda and Nissan have begun considering a business integration, and will study the creation of significant synergies between the two companies in a wide range of fields. It is significant that Nissan’s partner, Mitsubishi Motors, is also involved in these discussions. We anticipate that if this integration comes to fruition, we will be able to deliver even greater value to a wider customer base.“

Honda Director and Representative Executive Officer Toshihiro Mibe said: “At this time of change in the automobile industry, which is said to occur once every 100 years, we hope that Mitsubishi Motors’ participation in the business integration discussions of Nissan and Honda will lead to further social change, and that we will be able to become a leading company in creating new value in mobility through business integration. Nissan and Honda will start the discussion from today onwards with an aim to clarify the possibility of business integration by around the end of January in line with the consideration of Mitsubishi Motors.”

Comment from Mitsubishi Motors Director, Representative Executive Officer, and President and CEO Takao Kato said: “In an era of change in the automotive industry, the study between Nissan and Honda about a business integration will accelerate synergy maximization effects, bringing high value also to the collaborative businesses with Mitsubishi Motors. In order to realize synergies and to make the best use of each company’s strengths, we will also study the best form of cooperation.”

This marks the first time since 2018—when the country recorded its highest-ever arrivals of 2.3 million—that such numbers have been reached. The achievement reflects the resilience of the tourism industry despite the challenges of the past five years. The past week recorded daily tourist arrivals exceeding 10,000—a figure expected to rise further towards the end of the month—the milestone underscores the success of combined efforts by the private sector stake holders and  Sri Lanka Tourism in ensuring a robust holiday season. Promotional campaigns and collaborative strategies have helped pave the way for this achievement, signaling a positive outlook for the future of the indsutry. Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has faced significant ups and downs since 2019, beginning with the Easter attacks, followed by the COVID-19 pandemic and an economic downturn. Despite these hurdles, the country welcomed 1.4 million tourists in 2023, and the steady growth into 2024 highlights its ability to rebound and regain its status as a sought-after destination. Strategic government intervention played a key role in this progress, with the initial step taken by the newly elected government resolving the online visa issues in September 2024 ensuring smooth travel for international visitors. The government’s recognition of tourism as a priority industry underlines its commitment to fostering an inclusive economy, with ambitious targets of 3 million arrivals and USD 5 billion in revenue by 2025. A special ceremony was held at the Bandaranaike International Airport’s Silk Route Lounge to honour the two millionth tourist. Hosted by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and Airport Aviation Services Limited, the event featured traditional dance performances and the presentation of special mementos. Sri Lanka’s rich diversity continues to captivate travelers worldwide, offering everything from sun-kissed beaches to lush mountains and exotic wildlife. The country’s efforts have been recognized globally, with 21 international tourism accolades in 2024 alone. These include Forbes Magazine naming Sri Lanka the fourth most popular solo travel destination, National Geographic highlighting the Pekoe Trail as one of the world’s best hiking experiences, and the Wanderlust Gold Award for Most Desirable Island. Looking ahead, the government’s strategic direction focuses on creating a sustainable and inclusive tourism economy. Plans to extend free visas to travelers from 39 countries next year aim to further incentivize travel to Sri Lanka. Combined with robust PR and digital campaigns targeting key source markets, the industry is well-positioned to achieve its ambitious goals for 2025 and beyond. Sri Lanka’s two millionth tourist arrival is more than just a milestone—it is a testament to the enduring appeal of this island paradise and the collective efforts of its people and institutions. With continued focus and innovation, Sri Lanka is poised to build on this success and solidify its place as a premier global travel destination.
