UN predicts world economic growth to remain at 2.8% in 2025

Reuters – Global economic growth is projected to remain at 2.8% in 2025, unchanged from 2024, held back by the top two economies, the U.S. and China, according to a United Nations report released on Thursday.
The World Economic Situation and Prospects report said that “positive but somewhat slower growth forecasts for China and the United States” will be complemented by modest recoveries in the European Union, Japan, and Britain and robust performance in some large developing economies, notably India and Indonesia.
“Despite continued expansion, the global economy is projected to grow at a slower pace than the 2010–2019 (pre-pandemic) average of 3.2%,” according to the report by the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
“This subdued performance reflects ongoing structural challenges such as weak investment, slow productivity growth, high debt levels, and demographic pressures,” it said.
The report said U.S. growth was expected to moderate from 2.8% last year to 1.9% in 2025 as the labour market softens and consumer spending slows.
It said growth in China was estimated at 4.9% for 2024 and projected to be 4.8% this year with public sector investments and a strong export performance partly offset by subdued consumption growth and lingering property sector weakness.
Europe was expected to recover modestly with growth increasing from 0.9% in 2024 to 1.3% in 2025, “supported by easing inflation and resilient labour markets,” the report said.
South Asia is expected to remain the world’s fastest-growing region, with regional GDP projected to expand by 5.7% in 2025 and 6% in 2026, supported by a strong performance by India and economic recoveries in Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the report said.
India, the largest economy in South Asia, is forecast to grow by 6.6% in 2025 and 6.8% in 2026, driven by robust private consumption and investment.
The report said major central banks are likely to further reduce interest rates in 2025 as inflationary pressures ease. Global inflation is projected to decline from 4% in 2024 to 3.4% in 2025, offering some relief to households and businesses.
It calls for bold multilateral action to tackle interconnected crises, including debt, inequality, and climate change.
“Monetary easing alone will not be sufficient to reinvigorate global growth or address widening disparities,” the report added.

Emirates set to become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline™

Emirates has launched an inspiring journey to officially become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline™, inviting customers with autism and sensory sensitivities to experience Emirates’ seamless services and personalised hospitality, making travel more accessible for all. The inaugural designation is set to be formally awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) in the coming months, when more than 30,000 Emirates cabin crew and ground staff will have completed the initial training. Emirates also plans to roll out new standards and services that will improve the on ground and inflight travel experience for both customers on the autism spectrum and their families and companions, to be announced later in the year. Accessible Travel for all For many members of the global autism community, international air travel is a highly challenging experience, or something to be avoided completely, due to the high level of sensory stimuli that can be involved. A survey on AutismTravel.com revealed that 78% of families are hesitant to travel or visit new locations, and that 94% of respondents would take more vacations if they had access to places where staff are autism-trained and certified. As part of Emirates’ mission to make travel more inclusive and accessible for all, this significant step also supports Dubai’s ambition to become the most accessible destination in the world. What is the Autism Certified Airline™ designation (ACA)? Driven by its commitment to creating a welcoming travel experience for all customers including individuals with autism and those with sensory sensitivities, Emirates worked collaboratively with IBCCES, a leading organization in autism and neurodiversity training and certification, to conduct an onsite review and comprehensive audit. As part of a vast research endeavour, IBCCES surveyed more than 14,000 people with a variety of disabilities, including people with autism, those with sensory sensitivities and their families and caregivers. The survey data was collated alongside numerous interviews, an International Air Transport Association (IATA) industry survey, and feedback from 1,200 industry professionals – helping develop the most beneficial standards for both passengers and airline staff. In addition to the feedback collated, IBCCES experts also conducted several Emirates flight audits on both long and short haul routes. The collation of detailed data ensured input from key stakeholders including the lived experiences of people with autism, global thought leaders, industry professionals and healthcare experts – combined to create new industry standards that accommodate passengers with autism and sensory sensitivities during air travel. Using a data-driven approach, Emirates and IBCCES partnered to create a new blueprint for serving passengers with accessibility requirements, encompassing the entire journey – from ground services to in-flight services, and Emirates will lead the way in bringing these new standards into practice in aviation for the first time. The thorough certification process includes ensuring at least 80% of customer-facing staff complete the dedicated training, alongside a commitment to ongoing training and improvements. Emirates’ autism and sensory-awareness training for more than 30,000 staff As part of the designation, Emirates’ ground staff and cabin crew will undertake a new, focused training on autism and sensory awareness to equip them with the understanding and skills to address needs of travellers with autism and sensory sensitivities, along with their families. The training educates Emirates’ teams on the spectrum of autism, misconceptions and challenges faced, the myriad ways to assist customers dependent on their individual needs, and potential stimulus and triggers that staff should be aware of. The new training builds on the foundations established by the Emirates ‘Introduction to Autism and Hidden Disabilities’ training, which was completed by 23,000 staff in 2023. Emirates’ new standards and services for customers with autism Throughout 2025 and beyond, Emirates will be introducing new standards and services for customers with autism and sensory conditions that will ensure more enjoyable and accessible travel. One such service is the introduction of ‘sensory guides’ – digital aids developed as part of the audit conducted by IBCCES in collaboration with Emirates that empower travellers to make informed decisions about the various environments encountered, and plan what suits their needs and preferences. The guides were created by conducting comprehensive facilities audits across Dubai locations and the inflight experience, measuring sensory inputs in public areas such as sound levels, lighting, and potential sights and smells. Another development expected in 2025 will be the introduction of neurodiverse sensory products, for customers on Emirates flights – sensory fidget toys or aids that can encourage focus, help to reduce self stimulatory behaviour and de-stress. Working together for Accessible Travel: Emirates, Dubai Airports and Dubai Tourism In April 2024, Emirates achieved a Certified Autism Center™ Designation for all four of its Dubai Check In facilities including its dedicated hub in Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport (DXB). In December 2023, Dubai Airport was celebrated as the first international airport to receive the Certified Autism Centre™ Designation. Continuing to drive the accessible travel agenda forward, Emirates’ new training programme, as well as new standards and protocols to be implemented in stages in 2025 and beyond, will enable neurodiverse customers to fly more comfortably. These achievements align with the Department of Economy and Tourism’s (DET) vision of Dubai becoming the first Certified Autism Destination™ (CAD) in the Eastern Hemisphere. By working closely together – Emirates, the Department of Economy and Tourism, Dubai Airports, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs, Dubai Police and Dubai Customs, are making significant inroads in inclusive and accessible travel.

The Central Verification Division of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, located in Orugodawatte, will digitize many functions, including issuing gate passes, starting today (10th, January). Accordingly, the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka expects this program to provide an efficient service with minimal human intervention, eliminating the need for paper and enhancing the transparency of the system. The new program will automate the previously manual collection of import and export document fees, automate the collection of verification fees, and launch an export verification management system with digitized gate passes, including QR codes. This will provide electronic payment facilities, 24-hour full-time service, transparency, reduction of human resources, and cost savings. In 1993, the establishment of industries throughout the island outside the investment zones led to the creation of the Central Verification Division in Orugodawatte. This institution, in collaboration with Sri Lanka Customs, carries out import and export clearances for industries and services. Every day, a significant number of BOI enterprise representatives visit this institution to seek its services, and until now, they have relied on an outdated system for filling out forms and issuing licenses. Under the new system, all these systems are expected to be innovated, and all tasks, including granting relevant approvals through a digital system with digital identification, are expected to be completed. The issuance of digital gate permits commenced today as the initial step of this program. The adoption of the digitation of the BOI investor experience will act as an enabler to attract more FDI, and it will be a good launching pad for attracting much-needed digital FDIs to the country. Mr. Arjuna Herath, the Chairman of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, speaking at the event, stated that industries under the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka earn 80% of the country’s industrial export revenue, for which they provide all necessary infrastructure facilities. Further Arjuna Herath said that the Information Technology Department of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka appreciates the introduction of this digital system and intends to utilize new technology for all sectors. The Director General of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, Mrs. Renuka Weerakoon, and many high-ranking officials participated in the event.

Port City Colombo celebrated the groundbreaking of the Marina Development at Port City Colombo with a special ceremony held on 10th January 2025. The occasion was graced by Chief Guest, Hon. Vijitha Herath, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment & Tourism. Also present at the event were H.E. Qi Zhenhong, Ambassador, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China; Mr. Harsha Amarasekera, Chairman, the Colombo Port City Economic Commission; Mr. Ishara Nanayakkara; Chairman, Brown and Company PLC and Deputy Chairman, LOLC Holdings PLC; Mr. Kapila Jayawardena – Group Managing Director/CEO, LOLC Holdings PLC; Mr. Kamantha Amarasekera – Director, Browns Investments PLC; Mr. Wang Gang, Managing Director, China Harbour Engineering Company, and Mr. Xiong Hongfeng, Managing Director, CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd. The luxury Marina Development at Port City Colombo is being undertaken as a joint venture between Browns Investments PLC (BI), the strategic investment arm of the LOLC Group, and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC). It is noteworthy to mention that BI was one of the first Sri Lankan companies to invest in Port City Colombo and to date, is currently the largest investor. Browns Investment PLC has invested in six land plots, of which this development includes four plots in the Marina District. “As the first developer in Colombo Port City, Browns Investments PLC takes immense pride in spearheading this groundbreaking initiative. This project aligns seamlessly with BI’s commitment to pioneering ventures that transform industries and contribute to the nation’s economic progress,” said Mr. Ishara Nanayakkara, Chairman, Brown and Company PLC and Deputy Chairman, LOLC Holdings PLC. He added, “The Marina Development represents a unique opportunity to redefine the luxury tourism landscape in South Asia. Located at the crossroads of international maritime routes, Sri Lanka is ideally positioned to become a hub for luxury yachting. This development will not only elevate the country’s appeal as a premium travel destination but also symbolise the island’s resilience and ambition to rise as a global contender in the tourism and maritime industries.” Spanning a total land area of 33,776 sqm, the Marina Development will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including sunset bars, seaside restaurants, retail outlets, and entertainment spaces, creating a vibrant and sophisticated environment for visitors. Designed to cater to a global clientele, the Marina will offer berthing space for up to 200 mid-to-large-sized vessels, filling a critical infrastructure gap in the region. “With a total investment of USD 120 million, the Marina Development is slated for completion by 2027,” said Mr. Kapila Jayawardena, Group Managing Director/CEO LOLC Holdings PLC. “This project underscores Sri Lanka’s potential to lead in luxury tourism while stimulating significant economic activity and positioning Colombo as a hub for maritime excellence.” Capitalising on Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, historical significance, and strategic location, the Marina Development will establish the island as a crucial stopover for yachts traveling between the Red Sea, the Maldives, and the Far East. Sri Lanka’s year-round favourable climate and proximity to key maritime routes makes it an attractive alternative to regional peers. Furthermore, the development addresses an untapped market opportunity by catering to the growing number of high-net-worth individuals in neighbouring India, who represent an expanding segment for luxury maritime services. “The groundbreaking of the Marina Development at Colombo Port City marks a significant milestone for Sri Lanka’s maritime tourism industry,” stated Harsha Amarasekera, Chairman of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission. “This project positions Sri Lanka to become a leading destination for luxury yachting in South Asia, attracting high-net-worth individuals and making a substantial contribution to the nation’s economic growth. President AKD’s team may learn from ‘One China’ – by Prof. Samitha Hettige

China’s first energy law adopted by the Standing Committee of the 14th National People’s Congress in November 2024 is effective from 1st January 2025. Analysts believe that this is an unprecedented step to modernize China’s energy management. This law shall manage the energy sector establishing institutional frameworks for green & low carbon energy transition ushering energy for economic development. President AKD should direct his team to study below during the official visit to energize Sri Lankan economy. The new law;

  1. Advances energy consumption revolution & fosters the green, low carbon consumption model.
  2. Introduces the minimum target share system of renewable energy consumption.
  3. Legalize the green certificate recognizing the environmental attributes & offers effective market incentives for individuals & enterprises to prioritize purchasing & using clean energy.
  4. Drives energy technology innovation for core competitiveness of key industries.
  5. Establishes institutional guarantees for technological innovation in the energy sector driven by enterprises & market demand.
  6. Is expected to foster synergy between industries, universities & research institutes.
  7. Sets direction for the efficient use of fossil fuels, large application of renewable energy, energy storage & hydrogen as a fuel.
  8. Proposes improving financial & government procurement policies to encourage private sector capital inputs.
  9. Is expected to make Green energy consumption a norm (Ref Media).
Due to adopting clean energy policies from time to time more clean energy production & electric vehicles are seen on the roads in Sri Lanka. With timely new laws promoting clean energy, Sri Lanka may easily go to the level of using low altitude electric vehicles such as the RX4E for economic development. Electric aircraft RX4E China’s internally developed 4 seat electric aircraft RX4E became the first electric aircraft to obtain type certification. RX4E is the first fully electric aircraft designed under Chinese civil aviation regulations & has a wingspan of 13.5 M & is 8.4 M long. Powered by a lithium battery (70 kWh) it has a maximum takeoff weight of 1260 KG. The RX4E has so far achieved a maximum flight time of 90 minutes with zero emissions, low noise, reduced operational costs, high safety & reliability. It is anticipated to serve in pilot training, sightseeing, experiential flying, aerial photography & aviation surveying (Ref. CAAC). Similar applications may help more internal connectivity & micro economic development in Sri Lanka ultimately preventing internal conflicts while improving quality of life. Tibet is also China Tibet Autonomous Region which recently suffered a strong earthquake has been part of Great China historically. As part of the Belt & Road Initiative many US based Beer manufacturers have also invested in Tibet due to its clean water resources. It is the only region in China where the central government is funding free education for most number of years. Tibetan statistics indicate that quality of life including life expectancy have significantly increased after the Peoples Liberation Army established control in 1959 (during the same time when the Indian Army took Goa from Portugal). The Sri Lankan government recently renewed its 1957 recognition of ‘One China’. Historically Sri Lanka worked with the Great Chinese Empire referred in ancient chronicles as ‘Maha Cheenaya’ (similar to ‘Maha Brithanya’). Though some say China isn’t a democracy in the 21st century its only permanent member of the UN which practices ‘One Country – Many Systems’ method of government. Honk Kong returned to Chinese control in 1997 after a 99 year lease to the British. Macao leased to the Portuguese returned in 1999. Taiwan Island was part of the Chinese empire & its cultural & political bonds with the mainland are inseparable. To do list for President AKD If President AKD can guide his officers during the China trip to learn more on above developments, it will help Sri Lanka to takeoff with; good emissions, loud noise, reduced operational costs, high safety & reliability opening Sri Lanka to the air spaces of the Belt & Road Initiative. The Chinese who have many cultural similarities to Sri Lankans & Indians may feel that any sincere attempt to develop a society for the good of its people would be blessed by Chinese god ‘Wei-Tuo’ (Bodhisathva Skanda) AKA ‘Kataragama Deviyo’ in Sri Lank & ‘Subrahmanya’ in India. (Views expressed are personal/ Photos: RX4E & ‘Wei-Tuo’ – source WWW).
