Following Emirates’ successful launch to Madagascar in September 2024, the airline will introduce additional flights to the island nation, boosting its schedule from four to six-weekly services, starting 2 April 2025. The move reinforces the airline’s commitment to support Madagascar’s tourism ambitions to accommodate more leisure visitors and promote the island destination to global audiences. The boost in operations, in response to strong demand for its passenger services between the capital city and Dubai, was announced at a press conference held by Madagascar’s Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Tourism, and Emirates in Antananarivo today. Since flights commenced last year, Emirates has witnessed tremendous demand for its passenger services, both inbound and outbound, between Antananarivo and Dubai. With the current four weekly flights operating at near full capacity, the significant uplift to the number of seats offered on the route will support Madagascar’s efforts to increase visitor arrivals into the country, while also providing more choice and convenience for travellers to plan trips to and from the popular Indian Ocean destination. Announcing the expansion of Emirates’ services to the island at the press conference, Essa Sulaiman Ahmad, Emirates’ Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations for West Asia and Indian Ocean said: “We are pleased to boost our services to Madagascar by offering two additional flights per week in line with soaring demand for travel since the start of operations. Our growing flight schedule to the island means better connectivity, more choice and convenient options for travellers. Enhancing services will also strengthen the economic ties between Madagascar and the UAE, by supporting more inbound and outbound leisure and business travel to the island and bolstering trade lanes with additional cargo capacity. As tourism to Madagascar flourishes, local businesses thrive, generating a ripple effect that benefits the local communities.  We would like to thank the authorities, the Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Tourism for their support, and we look forward to strengthening our connections and supporting the nation’s development as it looks towards the future.” To meet seasonal demand, Emirates recently increased its services for a temporary period, from four to five weekly flights and the new frequency represents a significant boost to its operations and capacity on the route. “We have been diligently supporting the country’s tourism agenda by promoting the destination across our network, which is evident from the healthy bookings, and we will make every effort to continue raising awareness around the vibrant island’s unique charm and stunning natural landscapes to support sustainable traffic growth,” added Ahmad. The expanded schedule between Dubai and Antananarivo, linked via Mahe, will operate on all days except Mondays. Flights EK707 and EK708 are scheduled to operate as follows (all times are local):

Holiday packages can also be booked through Emirates Holidays and other tour operators around the globe. Highlighting the importance of Emirates’ additional flights to Madagascar, His Excellency Dr Manambahoaka Valéry F. Ramonjavelo, Minister of Transport and Meteorology said: “Since February 2024, we have accelerated the strengthening of trust between the United Arab Emirates and Madagascar, and the air connectivity provided by Emirates contributes to these ties being built between our two countries. The increase to six weekly frequencies by Emirates is a strong signal of confidence in the country, particularly in the tourism destination of the Great Island. We are on the right path to achieving more than one flight per day.” Madagascar’s Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Viviane Dewa added: “The arrival of Emirates, with direct flights to Madagascar, has been a breath of fresh air for our tourism sector. This flight has connected our island to over 140 destinations worldwide, thereby opening up new opportunities for the promotion of Madagascar as a destination. Our ambitious target of reaching one million tourists by 2028 will be significantly supported by the continued improvement of air connectivity, particularly through major hubs such as Dubai, and by collaborating with renowned airlines such as Emirates. On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts of Madagascar, we look forward to further strengthening the partnership with Emirates to provide smoother air transport and welcoming more international tourists, thereby contributing to the growth of our tourism sector.” Emirates has supported Madagascar’s tourism agenda by promoting it as a top leisure destination to its global network of tour operators. Its efforts have included planning familiarisation trips for 32 of its top travel agencies from major feeder markets to visit the island. Amongst the island’s main attractions, Madagascar is home to three UNESCO world heritage sites and is celebrated for its thriving biodiversity. Over the past few months, the airline has experienced strong demand from the UAE, Sri Lanka, France, UK, mainland China, Japan, Spain, and Italy to Madagascar. From Madagascar, travellers have mainly ventured to Dubai, the hub city of Emirates, in addition to Seychelles, France, India, Sri Lanka, Italy and Japan. The Geoffrey Bawa Trust Participates in ICAM22 held at M+ Hong Kong

As the first South Asian member of the International Confederation of Architectural Museums (ICAM), the Geoffrey Bawa Trust participated in the most recent edition of its biennial conference in December 2024. The Trust has been a member of ICAM since 2022.  ICAM22 brought architectural institutions and experts together for a multi-day event that included panels, tours, lectures, and collaborative sessions. The conference took place in Asia for the first time through local host M+, a Hong Kong-based visual culture museum and fellow member of ICAM. M+ Museum Director Suhanya Raffel is also one of six Trustees at the Geoffrey Bawa Trust.  Founded in 1979, ICAM is “the international forum for professionals working in architecture museums, centres, libraries, and archives.” Chief Curator Shayari de Silva said of membership, “ICAM is an international platform for architecture museums of varied scales,. As one of the very few cultural institutions in Sri Lanka with contemporary architecture collections and exhibitions as a focus, we believe that it is important we participate in such global forums.” Members connect throughout the year before convening biennially for the international conference, which focuses on critical issues facing museum and curatorial work. De Silva and Curator Aneesha Mustachi represented the Geoffrey Bawa Trust throughout ICAM22. “The biennial conference, in particular, is an important opportunity to reflect on how institutions around the world are working with their architectural collections and bringing this discipline into the public sphere. The opportunity to exchange methodologies and approaches amongst museum professionals and archivists is one we greatly appreciate,” said de Silva. Session II of the conference, “Long Term Strategic Planning and Delivery – An Active Dialogue,” addressed museums’ adaptations to global change. De Silva and Mustachi joined Avianti Armand and Adelia Andani of Museum Arsitektur Indonesia for an economy-focused conversation moderated by the Associate Director of Collections at the Canadian Centre for Architecture and recently-appointed ICAM co-president Martien de Vletter. De Silva explained how the Trust runs “largely self-sufficiently” due to a “rather unorthodox approach of opening up Geoffrey’s home in Colombo and garden Lunuganga for the public to visit and stay—a measure that has allowed us to operate independently and with integrity and that has also helped in keeping these spaces alive and functional.” Mustachi reflected on the resilience of the Geoffrey Bawa Trust throughout various challenges in Sri Lanka in recent years. “We also touched on how long-term planning may not always pan out as expected. For us, experiencing an economic crisis and import restriction in the middle of putting together an exhibition on the Archives meant we had to change tack and figure out how to rely on skills, materials and resources available to us within our borders and even within our small team.” The Geoffrey Bawa Trust presented at the conference for the second time since joining ICAM in 2022, a mark of its increasing global reach through international programming such as the travelling exhibition Geoffrey Bawa: It is Essential to be There. “One thing I noticed and deeply appreciated at ICAM was the inclusion of institutions at every end of the spectrum: small teams like us at GBT, large-scale teams from older institutions, and everything in between. This helped me understand what growth and progress looks like at every stage, which was useful to discuss common problems we all face and how each institution navigates issues with the resources available to them,” said Mustachi. On 6 December, the ICAM22 General Assembly announced de Silva as one of four new ICAM board members under the leadership of unanimously voted co-presidents de Vletter and Ikko Yokoyama of M+, who also organised the conference with Shirley Surya.

China, Sri Lanka agree more investment and economic cooperation

Reuters – China and Sri Lanka agreed on more investment and economic cooperation on Wednesday as China’s President Xi Jinping met recently-elected Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Beijing.
The countries signed 15 cooperation documents, including agreements on economic and technological development and aligning China’s ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ with Sri Lanka’s 2030 digital economy blueprint.
Specifics of the deals were not disclosed at the signing ceremony.
Dissanayake’s visit to his country’s largest bilateral lender comes after first travelling to regional rival India.
Dissanayake won a big majority in September’s election, pledging to tweak the terms of an International Monetary Fund rescue package, and on his leftist coalition’s plans to fight poverty and graft.
Sri Lanka had been moving closer to China under the previous Rajapaksa government, leaning heavily on Chinese lending to build highways, a port, an airport and a coal power plant as part of Xi’s flagship cross-continent Belt and Road infrastructure initiative.
Colombo secured a preliminary$10 billion bilateral debtdeal rework with key lenders including China, Japan and India last June and a $12.5 billion bondholder deal in December.
However, it needs direct agreements with China EXIM Bank and China Development Bank to lock in the deal to continue demonstrating progress to the IMF in restructuring its foreign debt to secure further disbursements from a $2.9 billion IMF bailout programme.
“I am willing to work with you, Mr President, to chart a new vision for the development of bilateral relations and promote new and greater achievements in China-Sri Lanka’s friendship and cooperation,” Xi told Dissanayake on Wednesday, speaking at the Great Hall of the People.
Welcoming more Chinese investment, Dissanayake told his host: “China has supported important and valuable infrastructure development in Sri Lanka via the Belt and Road Initiative and China has been and remains a key development partner.”
But during his visit to Delhi in December, Dissanayake struck a wide range of energy and security cooperation agreements with the other regional superpower, signalling his new government wants to become less reliant on Beijing.
Sri Lanka’s economy has begun a tentative recovery, but the high cost of living is still a critical issue for many, especially the poor.
China, the world’s second-largest economy, could give an economic helping hand by buying more Sri Lankan goods, of which it mostly buys tea, clothing, chemicals and other commodities, according to U.N. COMTRADE data, and through encouraging more Chinese tourists to consider holidaying there.
“It is necessary to strengthen people-to-people exchanges between the two sides and enhance new ties between the two peoples,” Xi told Dissanayake, according to the Chinese state broadcaster.

Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage obtained the Common Criteria (CC) Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 4+ security certification, the highest level of security certification for storage products. The certification was approved by SGS Brightsight located in Delft in the Netherlands, and issued by TrustCB. A CC EAL provides assurance on the security, reliability, and privacy protection of an IT product or solution. It is the most authoritative IT product security certification and is globally recognized. Certifications from EAL1 through EAL7 are offered, with higher levels requiring more detailed documentation and rigorous testing. Each higher level provides greater security assurance. EAL4+ provides significantly higher security assurance than EAL3+, that Huawei obtained in 2021. It entails higher security standards for security functions, security design, configuration management, and security testing, as well as an in-depth review mechanism for source code. EAL4+ is currently the highest security level for a storage product. Digitalization is transforming the world but comes with an increased risk of cyberattacks, exploitation of vulnerabilities, and ransomware. These threats traverse the physical and digital realms. As a result, data breach incidents, corruption, and data losses are becoming more common. Ensuring security while unlocking the value of data is essential to the growth and development of the digital economy. As the backbone of the digital economy, data storage is the last line of defense for data security and a vital component of a robust, multilayered defense system. Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage is one of the most secure foundations for data infrastructure in the digital economic era. It is equipped with comprehensive intrinsic security features and built on a foundation of multilayered security measures that span architecture design, source code, development environment, release, and deployment. The solution significantly enhances data resilience with capabilities such as ransomware protection, breach prevention, data backup and disaster recovery, and trusted data circulation.   Photo caption: Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage earned the CC EAL4+ certification, the highest security level for a storage product
